These are some of the verses I've been reading yesterday... just seeing how much being "deceived" is linked to sin... and how much satan's main tool (at least with the elect) is to dupe us (delude, trick, lie to) into falling for his false "logic" . -Nick
Rom 7:10-11 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring
life actually brought death. For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by
the commandment, *deceived me*, and through the commandment put me to death.
1 Cor 6:9-13 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom
of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor
adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the
greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom
of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by
the Spirit of our God. "Everything is permissible for me"--but not
everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"--but I will not
be mastered by anything. "Food for the stomach and the stomach for
food"--but God will destroy them both. (Apparently many will be deceived about even things as obvious as this.)
2 Cor 11:1 I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you
are already doing that. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I
promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a
pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. (subtle delusions)
Gal 6:7-9 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he
sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will
reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit
will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the
proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Eph 5:1-10 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and
live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a
fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be
even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed,
because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be
obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather
thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy
person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of
Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do
not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are
light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light
consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases
the Lord.
2 Th 2:8-17 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus
will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of
his coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the
work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and
wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.
1 Tim 2:13-14 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one
deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.
2 Tim 3:12-15 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ
Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Titus 3:1-8 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be
obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be
peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. At one
time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
James 1:21-27 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so
prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom (that's a different kind of law!), and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does. If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
1 John 1:5-10 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:
God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have
fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the
truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us
from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the
truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim
we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place
in our lives.
